Philip Shaw, the long-time Rosemount chief winemaker (1982-2003) and twice London International Winemaker of the Year (1986, 2000), planted the Koomooloo Vineyard above Orange in 1988-89. First commercial vintage 2004; in 2015 he handed Philip Shaw Wines to sons Damian and Daniel and started his second label HOOSEGG. Halliday five-star. The cool-climate, continental conditions are the point; the wines follow suit, particularly the Chardonnay and Cabernet Franc. Cellar door at 100 Shiralee Road, Orange (open 11am-5pm daily, bookings required). Worth the drive from the Hunter for the climatic contrast.— Yarranabbe Editorial
