Dr Max Lake's 1963 vineyard, the first new Hunter planting of the twentieth century, and the one that demonstrated the region could grow Cabernet at all. Lake sold in early 2000 to Peter and Lee Fogarty, who appointed Hunter-born and Hunter-trained Rodney Kempe as winemaker; Kempe remains in the role twenty-five years later. Estate-grown, single-site, with the annual release rationed to A-List subscribers. Two flagships in equal measure: the Cabernet blend (the original argument for the property) and the Chardonnay (the modern argument). Cellar door is by appointment.— Yarranabbe Editorial
